My Approach to Therapy and Testing

MY APPROACH TO THERAPY

During the many (many) years spent in school, professors inundate you with theory after theory, setting agendas, using "key" phrases, and advocating robot-like demeanor, leaving future clinicians confused, frightened, and unsure. I am not that. I am personable, genuine, and friendly. Using my education and background, I merge all of the theories, techniques, and research that I was taught, read about, and that is still emerging to help clients feel safe, curious, learn, adapt, and grow. I bring who I am to the therapeutic sessions and a realness and genuineness that helps you to be with me, to share with me, and to allow me to help you find your direction. Theories and techniques I use are founded in a humanistic, person-centered approach using cognitive-behavioral strategies to help improve mood, thoughts, and behaviors.

The #1 predictor of positive counseling outcomes is...the therapeutic relationship.

TESTING APPROACH

Testing is an exciting, nerve-wracking, and growth-oriented endeavor. Psychological testing can help explain why some things come easy to you while others are hard, why you might feel "stuck" or that you are underperforming, what medication(s) might be helpful, identify areas for change, and recognize positive aspects of your functioning. Many clients have felt relief and/or validation following testing.

Developing a relationship with clients during testing is an important factor many psychologists forget. This starts during the intake session where I gather copious amounts of information from you. It is direct and detailed, so I set out to create an environment where you feel comfortable, safe, and heard. During the intake session, you will be asked about your developmental, educational/occupational, social, and psychological history. My interpersonal style helps calm anxieties around revealing vulnerable information about yourself and your testing concerns. At the end of the intake session, I will explain my testing procedures to you, as well as send you more information about the process and fees.
